About Our Program

In 2022, HealthPoint partnered with the Washington Association for Community Health to create an on-the-job training Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program for those interested in pursuing a certification in Medical Assisting. 

HealthPoint’s Medical Assistant Apprentice Training Program is a structured learning environment that provides the tools and skills for its learners to become confident and successful members of a healthcare team

What does a Medical Assistant do?

• Greets a variety of patients and escorts them to the exam room 

• Prepares patients for the provider; anticipates the needs of the provider to maintain efficient patient flow. 

• Performs phlebotomy and laboratory procedures  

• Performs and documents injections and immunizations. 

• Ensures exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients. 

• Cleans, prepares, and sterilizes instruments. 

• Assists the provider with procedures, exams, and patient education. 

• Manages back office paperwork, including but not limited to medication refills and prior authorizations 

• Observes and follows required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and general safety of employees and patients. 

• Answers telephones and supports care team members. 

• Performs other duties as assigned.

There are many ways to obtain Medical Assistant Certification; however, participating in an MA Apprenticeship Program has its advantages, including:  

• Gaining tangible work experience 

• Receiving full wages and benefits for the duration of training 

• HealthPoint will cover the costs of tuition, books, and the first attempt at the NHA MA Certification test 

• Extensive hands-on experience in technical skills 

• Successful completion of the program leads to being offered a permanent Medical Assistant position within the organization 

• Can earn up to 58 College Credits from Peninsula College 

HealthPoint’s MAAP Expectations

• Complete 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training with the support and guidance of an experienced one-on-one MA Coach 

• Complete 410 hours of supplemental unpaid online coursework 

• Attend three (3) in-person lab days with an expert instructor to practice and demonstrate mastery of hands-on technical skills 

• Log and report on-the-job hours and skills practices as required  

• Complete a 2-year service commitment to the organization after the completion of the program

• 18 years of age or older 

• High School Diploma or equivalent required 

• Ability to pass a Washington State Background check

We open positions for MA Apprentices quarterly. Cohorts begin in January, April, July, and October. Applications will open about 1.5 months before start dates. Locations of MA Apprentice positions vary each quarter. Possible locations include Auburn, Auburn North, Federal Way, Midway, Kent, Renton, Renton Sunset, Tukwila, Redmond, and Bothell.
