Overcoming Addiction and Homelessness with the Whole Care Program

When David Flores first visited HealthPoint’s Auburn clinic, he was just out of inpatient recovery and had little other than the clothes on his back. While his medical needs were many, the Auburn staff knew there was little they could do to help if Flores didn’t have his basic needs met.

The Whole Care team managed to get Flores a cell phone with a year of paid service and clothing. He was staying at a shelter with Compass Housing Alliance, where HealthPoint operates a clinic. “I wouldn’t have any way to make or track appointments if I didn’t have a phone. They look at what the person truly needs, the whole situation, and they provide that,” he says.

Flores is in recovery from opioid use, methamphetamine use, and alcoholism. His years of substance use and homelessness took a toll on his mind and body. With the help of Whole Care’s multi-disciplinary team, he’s able to get treatment for his mental health diagnosis, chronic pain, dental neglect, and other ailments that come from years of hardship.

“I was so long neglecting my body, my spirit, my emotions, my teeth, and everything. I use every aspect of that clinic,” he says.

Dignity for every patient

"What’s so striking about the care at HealthPoint is the sense of dignity they provide to each patient", says Flores. “I've been in medical situations where the fact that I am in recovery means there's no trust in me. That's not the feeling they have a HealthPoint Auburn. They just care for you and want to get you better,” he says.

Continuity of care

Flores also appreciates the continuity of care he experiences at HealthPoint. It’s clear when he visits that the staff knows him well and works together to meet his needs. “They share notes about my situation, and there have been times where I had three doctors and the social worker in the room with me to work together,” he says.

Removing barriers

The Whole Care team makes it easy for patients like Flores to access care. There’s a clinic right in the Compass shelter where he lives, which makes it easy to check in and pick up medication. If he ever misses an appointment, staff are proactive about helping him reschedule. When Medicaid at first denied coverage of a medication, the team was able to work with the agency to ensure he got it. “They went to bat for me. I know they’re always on my side,” says Flores.

With the help of HealthPoint and other community partners, Flores continues on his road to recovery in mind and in body. He considers anyone who’s a patient at HealthPoint fortunate to have found them. “They remove a lot of barriers. Their goal is to better the individual and their approach is flawless and seamless in my experience,” he says
